The music and film collections at Howard-Tilton Memorial Library support the diverse research, teaching, and learning needs of the Tulane community.
The rich audio collections of Tulane Libraries are a reflection of local and global musical cultures. In the collections housed and maintained by Media Services, the Tulane learning community can discover hundreds of independently released New Orleans albums, classical art music, experimental music, electroacoustic music, popular music, as well as a representative sampling of international art, traditional, and popular music.
Tulane Libraries also subscribes to a number of streaming audio databases to enrich the teaching, learning, and research experience of anyone with an active Tulane username and password.
Rare and unique recordings are also available at Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) and in the special collections of the Latin American Library (LAL). TUSC is located opposite Howard-Tilton Memorial Library in Jones Hall 202, and the LAL is on the 4th floor of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. One example includes the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz's extensive collections of sound and video recordings and oral histories, which represent the music of New Orleans and the surrounding region.
The film collection at Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is a rich primary research resource for critical sense-making and serves as a pedagogical tool for the Tulane teaching and learning community. International documentaries, art film, narrative features, and animated movies may all be found in the film collections. This collection provides the Tulane community access to an inclusive and representative selection of international film and filmmakers. All disciplines are represented in the audio-visual media collection with an emphasis on disciplines taught primarily through the Uptown campus as well as Public Health.
